My Top-Rated Eye Creams as a Former Beauty Trends Editor

Eye creams are one of those skincare categories where consumers are particularly vulnerable to clever marketing. The eye area is especially delicate, meaning signs of ageing can be more visible here – and brands know we’re willing to pay a premium for anything promising brighter, smoother, and more youthful-looking eyes.

Having tested thousands of products as a Beauty Trends Editor before working behind the scenes for one of the UK’s leading skincare brands, I’ve become much more interested in what’s actually happening inside a formula than how impressive the claims on the box sound.

A worthwhile eye product needs to do much more than simply contain a trending ingredient. For me, it’s about the overall formulation, whether the actives make sense for the eye area, how they’re delivered, how the product performs and, ideally, whether there’s credible testing behind the claims.

So, here are six eye products I consistently rate based on these criteria.

Erborian CC Eye Cream

For instant colour correction in a skincare-makeup hybrid

Why I rate it: This is a great example of why formulation can be far more important than a long list of trending ingredients.

Erborian CC Eye is essentially a skincare-makeup hybrid, designed specifically for the delicate eye area (rather than being a face CC cream that’s repurposed for under the eyes). Its standout feature is its use of encapsulated pigments, which blend effortlessly into the skin to subtly correct the look of dark circles.

It contains soothing , revitalising , and also delivers 20 UV protection. The coverage is deliberately light, so you’re not going to get the full camouflage of a full-coverage concealer – but that’s precisely why I like it. It gives my eye area a natural, yet significantly more even appearance and sits flawlessly either alone or under makeup. The formula has also been tested under dermatological and ophthalmological supervision, which is particularly relevant for a product designed for such a sensitive area.

Ideal for: Anyone whose main concern is tired-looking eyes. It’s particularly good if you want one quick morning step that moisturises, subtly corrects and brightens without looking like you’ve applied concealer.

Tatcha The Brightening Eye Cream

For premium brightening power in a multi-active formula

Why I rate it: This is one of the more expensive products on my list, but this is a case where I’d argue you’re paying for a very well-built formula rather than just the name on the jar.

This formula’s ingredient list is unusually interesting for a brightening eye cream. Alongside a deeply nourishing base, this eye cream is crafted with a 12-hour time-release to help continuously brighten the eye area throughout the day. Meanwhile, encapsulated and an booster work to target discolouration while Japanese plum and bioferments reduce puffiness and address dark circles.

The approach is both sophisticated and multi-dimensional, delivering hydration, antioxidant protection, brightening power and support. The formula is also fragrance-free, dermatologist tested and non-comedogenic – all key considerations when you’re applying a relatively active formula to the delicate eye area.

Ideal for: Anyone looking for a premium, multifunctional eye cream with a particular focus on brightness, hydration and early signs of ageing. I’d especially consider it if your eye area tends to look dull or dehydrated (but not so much if you require a stronger anti-ageing treatment).

Beauty of Joseon Revive Eye Serum: Ginseng + Retinal

For retinal-led, anti-ageing benefits

Why I rate it: This is probably the most interesting active-led formula on my list, and one I often point to when someone asks me what I mean by a thoroughly-considered skincare formul ation, where the supporting ingredients are just as important as the hero active.

The obvious headline is retinal, but it’s the way the rest of the formula has been built around retinal that really interests me. Beauty of Joseon uses stabilised retinal liposomes, alongside ginseng, niacinamide, and NP to deliver effective yet nourishing anti-ageing results. In other words, this isn’t just a retinal serum that happens to be marketed for the eye area. Instead, it intentionally combines a vitamin A derivative with ingredients that support deep hydration of the delicate eye area as well as a healthy skin barrier.

The brand reports an 8.65% improvement in the look of wrinkles after two weeks, [1] alongside a 24-hour sensitive-skin patch test. [2] This sample is small, so I wouldn’t treat this as definitive evidence, but it’s considerably more convincing than simply pointing to studies on retinal as a singular ingredient.

Ideal for: Anyone who’s looking for an active eye treatment for fine lines and early signs of ageing, and particularly if you want retinal without paying a premium price.

Paula’s Choice Pro-Collagen Peptide Firming Eye Serum

For peptide-powered focus on firmness and puffiness

Why I rate it: If your main concerns are loss of firmness, puffiness, and the look of fine lines around the eyes, this is an ideal option.

Paula’s Choice has built this powerful yet gentle formula around a unique peptide complex to deliver firming, lifting and de-puffing results across the entire eye area; eyelids, brow bone and under-eyes. But the all-encompassing formulation isn’t the only thing that makes this stand out. The product also comes with a cooling metal applicator, which gives an immediate de-puffing effect while helping to distribute the lightweight gel-serum around the eye contours. It’s a small design detail, but one that perfect makes sense for the specific anatomy of the area.

According to the brand’s studies, 94% of participants agreed their entire eye area was visibly lifted and tightened after four weeks while 88% agreed their under-eye bags felt instantly depuffed. [3]

Ideal for: Anyone primarily concerned with fine lines, puffiness and loss of firmness who doesn’t want a retinoid-based eye treatment. It’s also particularly good if you want something that sits really well underneath makeup.

The Inkey List Bio-Active Ceramide Eye Cream

For a treatment-led formula at an accessible price point

Why I rate it: This is my value-for-money pick, and a great example of why an expensive eye cream isn’t automatically a better one.

This formula combines bio-active ceramides and a tetrapeptide complex, delivering a much more ‘treatment-focused’ formulation than you might expect at this price point. While ceramides deeply nourish the delicate skin around the eyes (that’s more vulnerable to dehydration), peptides target the look of fine lines and firmness.

The formula also has clinical testing to back up many of its claims. Not only does the formula deliver up to 4x visible wrinkle reduction, [4] but it’s also clinically proven to lift eyelids by 51%. [5] So, at around £15 for 18ml in the UK, you’re getting ceramides, peptides and clinically proven results at a fraction of the price of many premium eye creams.

Ideal for: Anyone who wants a proven, treatment-focused eye cream without spending £50–£70. It’s particularly well suited to dry or dehydrated eye areas, early fine lines and anyone wanting to prioritise barrier support and firmness.

The bottom line?

No single eye cream can address every single eye concern – and, as this list shows, the most impressive formulas often take very different approaches. The right choice ultimately comes down to what your eye area actually needs.

What I look for is a formula where the ingredients, delivery system, and texture are all intentional and the formula is, ideally, backed by clinical studies. A trending active might attract your attention, but what should earn your attention is the formulation built around the hero ingredient to boost its benefits and/or counteract any potential pitfalls.
